John Merle Southerly

               John Merle Southerly, age 68 of Moorefield, WV, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas, WV due to complications of Alzheimer’s. He was surrounded by his family.

               Born in Cumberland, MD on June 10, 1951, he was the son of the late Melvin “Bud” Southerly and Kathryn “Kate” Southerly. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a half-brother and a half-sister.

               Johnny is survived by the love of his life, Elaine Cullers Southerly; two daughters, Elizabeth Simmons of Franklin, WV, and Jennifer Champ and husband Shawn of Maysville, WV; and two granddaughters, Allison Champ and Lindsay Simmons. Also surviving are two brothers – his twin, Donnie Southerly and wife Donna of Old Fields, WV, and Melvin Southerly and wife Karen of Lima, OH, as well as other extended family members.              

               He was a graduate of Moorefield High School and was an employee of American Woodmark for 41 years. He was also a member of the Moorefield Church of the Brethren. Johnny enjoyed watching westerns on television, cheering on his Cincinnati Bengals, and spending time spoiling “Skippy,” his Jack Russel Terrier. Most of all, he enjoyed the time he spent with his granddaughters.

               The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, 2019 at the Elmore Funeral Home in Moorefield, WV. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 11, 2019 at the funeral home with Pastors Russell & Lucy Webster and Pastor Shawn Champ officiating. Burial will follow at the Olivet Cemetery in Moorefield, WV.

               In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hardy County Committee on Aging or the Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas, WV.

               The family would like to thank the staff at Cortland Acres Nursing Home for the excellent care and compassion shown to Johnny over the past year and a half.

               Arrangements are under the direction of the Elmore Funeral Home in Moorefield, WV.
