John Mitchell Sherman

 

John Mitchell Sherman, age 87, of Moorefield, WV, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at the Grant Rehabilitation and Care Center, Petersburg, WV.  Born on December 21, 1930 in Moorefield, WV, he was the son of the late John Brook Sherman and Pauline Mae Poling Sherman.  He is survived by his wife, Nina Hartman Sherman; and son, John Mitchell Sherman, Jr. both of Moorefield, WV.

John was a machinist and welder who began his career working for his father, Brook Sherman at Sherman Machine Shop.  After his father’s passing in 1958, he continued the business as Sherman Machine Shop and Parts Co. until 2016.  Along with this business, he also was a dealer for Massey-Ferguson Farm Equipment and Big A Auto Parts.  Later he acquired the local Radio Shack Dealership, which was run by his son, John Jr.  In the 70’s, he was chief mechanic on race car 44, owned by Eddie Hartman.

John served in the Korean War with the US Army from December 1952 – November 1954.  He was a charter member of the Moorefield Jaycees, a member of the Moorefield Lions Club (original Club Growler) for over 50 years, a member of the Masonic Lodge #29 AF&AM and served as a councilman for Town of Moorefield for 15 years.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Elmore Funeral Home, Moorefield, WV.  A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Elmore Funeral Home, Moorefield, WV with Pastor Harold George officiating.  Burial will follow at Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield, WV where military graveside rites will be accorded.  Memorial donations may be made to Moorefield Lions Club, P. O. Box 452, Moorefield, WV   26836.
