Nellie Lee Barr

Nellie Evans Barr of Arlington, Virginia passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at the Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington.

She was born on February 3, 1924 in Scot’s Ridge, West Virginia. She was the daughter of Rueben Evans and Myrtle Rumor. She is predeceased by her husband Elvy Paxton Barr and her two sons: Elwood Paxton Barr and Robert Lee Barr and one grandson, Michael Wayne Barr.

She leaves three children: Peggy Louise Barr, Stanley Earl Barr and Gale Evans Barr as well as 8 grandchildren : Sharon Owen, Edward Barr, David Barr, Robert Barr, Jr. (Janice), Chrissy Barr, Karen Garvin (Paul) Blaine Herring III(Donnalyn) and Ronald Barr and 19 great grandchildren and 16 great.great grandchildren.

In 1950 Nellie and Elvy and their five children moved to Arlington Virginia where they bought a house and raised their family. They were members of Bon-Air Baptist Church and Nellie continued to attend after the children grew up and left home.

Elvy was in the grocery business. Nellie worked part time at a well known five and dime store for several years and then she went to work for GEICO insurance company where she remained for 20 years.

Nellie loved to travel and went to many places. She traveled with her daughter to Hawaii where they attended luaus and saw Don Ho. She also went to Bermuda with her daughter and her family and went tank diving with them. Nellie traveled with her two nieces to Las Vegas and to Arizona to visit her brother Emory Evans.

Nellie loved gardening and particularly loved her roses, impatience and hydrangea.

Although Nellie moved to Arlington Virginia in 1950, she has always considered West Virginia to be her home.

Friends will be received at the Elmore Funeral Home on Saturday, July 24, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Services will follow in the funeral home chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Greg Wilkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Newhouse Cemetery, Rig, WV.
